BROADCAST MASSES

Canon Lloyd Elevates the Consecrated Host during Mass

The Mission of St Cuthman of Sussex has investigated the possibility of broadcasting Masses live over the Internet!  St Francis is already live and broadcasting Sunday Mass at 1030 in the modern rite; St Cuthman's is awaiting the resolution of some technical difficulties in order to broadcast the Traditional Latin Mass which is offered daily.  Follow the links below to view the Mass.

St Cuthman: Link to Mass Broadcasts

Whilst it is not possible to fulfil ones obligation to attend Mass this way, viewing or hearing Mass is a way of enhancing ones Spiritual Communion and of feeling closer to the Sacrament and the worshipping Church.  You may like to suggest viewing of these channels particularly to the housebound or those who live too far away to attend Mass regularly.

FIRST YEAR SEMINARIAN FORMATION PROGRAMME

After a recent meeting of the Formation Faculty, the First Year Seminary Formation Programme has been agreed, combining modules for the Catholic Certificate in Religious Studies (CCRS) through the Roman Catholic Seminary of Ushaw College, and subject modules taught "in-house" by senior Clergy.  As part of their ongoing formation, Clergy are highly recommended participating in some or all of the modules being offered as part of their own personal development.

The Programme will mirror the academic year with Semesters (Terms) from Sept-Dec "Michelmass"; Jan-Apr "Lent"; May-July "Trinity".  The CCRS course modules will be delivered on-line through the Ushaw Forum, Seminary modules will be delivered via on-line tutorials employing video/audio conferencing with complimentary reading material and resources. Essay deadlines will be for the end of the Semester allowing students the flexibility to manage their reading and essay preparation for themselves over the three month period of each term.   There will be at least one opportunity every Term for the students and teaching staff to meet together over a weekend or a few days to consolidate learning, to share experiences, for personal tuition, spiritual formation and liturgical practicum.

Our Emissary is received in Rome at the Vatican

The Very Revd. Fr. Jerome Kwasek

The Very Revd Fr Jerome Kwasek, Vicar General of the Western Province of CANC USA was received in a scheduled meeting with representatives of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity on August 23rd in the Vatican at the Holy See.  Several topics for discussion had been selected for the meeting after much correspondence between the CANC Chancery and the Pontifical Council including a discussion on how the Churches may more closely work and dialogue together.

Pastoral Worker Licenced for the Oxford Mission

The Chancellor, Canon Jerome Lloyd, presents the Licence to Eileen Burzynska accompanied by Fr. Brian Van Dungey.

Eileen Burzynska has been licensed by the Metropolitan-Bishop as a Pastoral Worker to assist Fr Brian in his developing parochial ministry in and around Oxford. The Licence was presented by the Vicar General and Chancellor Canon Jerome Lloyd during a recent visit to St Cuthman's in Brighton.

Orthdox Old Catholics in Europe

The Chancery is happy to report that the Vicar General's meeting with Father Paolo Lotti of the Old Catholic Church of Italy , has resulted in a positive desire by their Bishop to begin Intercommunion negotiations with the OCCE.  A similar invitation will be sent to contacts with Old Catholics in Belgium and we hope for a positive response from them.  Negotiations with the Old Catholic Church of Slovakia are also soon to begin again.

The CANC USA, CANCZ and the OCCE are One Church

Metropolitan Bishop Dennis Beevers OSJV and Archbishop-Metropolitan Robert Gubala SCR have executed a new Church covenant, effectively joining the Old Catholic Church in Europe to the Catholic Apostolic National Church USA and vice versa.  Although each local church shall continue to maintain their own Code of Canon Law and autonomy in local government, we are one church.  In addition, the Catholic Apostolic National Church of Zambia under Archbishop-elect Luciano Mbewe is also to be considered a province of CANC USA.  Each local church will retain their current names while recognising their familial ties with the others.

The OCCE was delighted to witness the reception of two seminarians by the Metropolitan Bishop after the ordination of Fr David Bradley.  Messers Peter Southgate and Patrick Loughlin will begin their formation studies in the Autumn.  Both were also licensed for pastoral work in their home parishes of St Cuthman of Sussex and St John the Divine, Derry respectively.  Please remember our seminarians in your prayers as they begin the five year process of spiritual and academic formation towards ordination into the Sacred Ministry.

CONSECRATED FOR SERVICE

Ordination of Fr David Bradley to the Sacred Presbyterate

Fr. David prostrated before the Altar

The weekend of the 11th-14th of July was one of real joy and celebration as well as prayerful contemplation for the OCCE.  The weekend was an Ordination Retreat and an opportunity for the Clergy to meet together in prayer and to spend time getting to know old friends and new.  Clergy traveled from all over the UK and Europe!   The Friday afternoon began with a rehearsal for the Ordination of Deacon David Bradley to the Priesthood.  At 6pm whilst a Mass was offered in the Oratory of the Saints, Vespers was simultaneously offered in the Community Chapel, then followed a fish supper and the rota of private Masses for the Saturday morning in Latin and in English, in both the new and old Rites of Mass.  At 11pm all gathered together again for the popular Office of Compline and for Benediction.

Saturday morning began with private Masses offered by rotation in the Community Chapel and Oratory of the Saints, starting from 530am through to 830am!  Then a welcome breakfast and Morning Prayer.  The Clergy met in Chapter which included the introduction of new colleagues, reports from the Parishes and a few Chancery notices.

At midday in the Chapel of the Community of the King of Love, Deacon David Bradley was ordained into the Sacred Presbyterate by His Excellency, Bishop Dennis Beevers during a Solemn offering of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, witnessed by Clergy and family and close friends of the Ordinand.  This Ordination was a culmination of a life-long vocation and a five year period of preparation for Deacon David who completed his year as a transitional Deacon.  Assisting the Bishop were Canon Martyn Douglas the Rector of Formation and Canon Jerome Lloyd OSJV the Vicar General, together with Metropolitan Bishop Emeritus, HE Bishop Robert McBride and nearly all of the Clergy of our Church.

Canon Lloyd preached on the meaning of the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and the Gospel of the day, the giving by Jesus on the Cross of Mary His mother to the disciple whom he loved.  In an at times very moving homily, Father explained the relationship of Jesus's humanity to His Divinity, of the motherhood of Mary and of the likening of Priests to the adoption of Mary as their mother with the disciple at the foot of the Cross.

After the Ordination, the Clergy, family and friends came forward to receive the new Priest's blessing and to kiss his freshly consecrated hands.   A buffet lunch followed and the afternoon was given over to relaxing with friends old and new and private interviews with the senior clergy.  Then at 5pm Father David offered Mass for the first time, a votive to Our Lady, assisted by Canon Lloyd, in the Oratory of the Saints with a considerable number of his colleagues, family and friends present.  There followed Vespers, a celebratory dinner and Compline and Benediction.

Sunday morning began, again with private Masses, breakfast and Morning Prayer followed by a Chapter meeting of the Oratory of St John Vianney during which were received two new Oratorians and five Companions by the Provost General.  There followed a period of time for reflection and preparation for the Solemn Mass at midday presided from the throne by HE Bishop Dennis and celebrated by Canon Lloyd OSJV.  Canon Douglas CSJV then gave the homily after which were received by Bishop Dennis, two Seminarians, Mr Peter Southgate (Brighton & Hove) and Mr Patrick Loughlin (Lisburn, NI)!  Canon Douglas preached on the meaning of vocation and priestly service.

After Mass was had lunch and then the departure of Clergy and friends.   As before, this weekend was a wonderful way for our Clergy to meet each other and share their news as well as celebrate solemnly together the consecration of a new brother priest and two new junior brothers as seminarians.
